Plus, the group goes down in history as the best-selling American gospel singers. In 2023 the net worth of Denise Clark is estimated to be around 800,000 USD.

How Did Denise Clark Become Rich?

The American gospel singer, Denise Clark, was born on 10th September 1953 in Detroit, Michigan, the United States of America (USA). Her father, Elbert Clark, was a Reverend in Berea Church of God In Christ. The church’s geographical location is in Detroit, Michigan. Her father was born in 1927 and passed away in 2001. On the other hand, her mother is the celebrated choir director, Dr Mattie Moss Clark. She was the pioneer behind gospel singing in churches. She was born in 1925 and passed away in 1994 due to complications arising from an amputation, diabetes, and the aftereffects of a massive stroke.

Dr Mattie Moss Clark and Reverend Elbert Clark tied the knot on 30th November 1952. Denise Clark was the couple’s first child. Subsequently, the happily married couple had three more daughters named Elbernita Clark, Dorinda Grace Clark, and Karen Valencia Clark. So, Denise Clark had three siblings. It is mentionable that prior to marrying Reverend Elbert Clark, Dr Mattie Moss Clark was married to Leo Henry Cullum Sr. Hence, in her first marriage, Mattie gave birth to two children – a son named Leo Henry Cullum, and a daughter named Jacqueline Lenita Cullum. As such, the two kids are Denise Clark’s elder half-siblings.

Both of her parents come from strict Christian backgrounds. As a result, she and her siblings had a very religious upbringing. Her mother encouraged all of them to actively pursue singing in their church’s choir. Thus, under their mother’s tutelage, the siblings were singing in church services regularly by the late-1960s. The songs that they sang were written by their mother.

Dr Mattie Moss Clark and Reverend Elbert Clark decided to part ways after more than twenty blissful years of marriage. Therefore, they got divorced in 1973. After the divorce, Dr Mattie Moss Clark formed the group called “The Clark Sisters” that consisted of her five daughters Jacqueline Lenita Clark (nee Cullum), Denise Clark, Elbernita Clark, Dorinda Grace Clark, and Karen Valencia Clark.

The girls’ maternal uncle Bill Moss produced the group’s first album “Jesus Has A Lot To Give” in 1973 under his label Billesse Records. The same record label produced their second album “Mattie Moss Clark Presents The Clark Sisters” in 1974. The two albums helped the group to gain recognition in Detroit, Michigan, USA. It also attracted the attention of Sound of Gospel Records, who signed the girl group in 1974. After releasing the fourth album (sixth overall) “He Gave Me Nothing to Lose” in 1979, Dr. Mattie Moss Clark handed over the reins of the group to her third daughter Elbernite Clark, who was fondly called Twinkie. Their final album “Your Brought the Sunshine” with the record label, Sound of Gospel, brought them unmatched success and mainstream fame in 1981. The next year, the record label New Birth Records released the sisters’ eighth album “Sincerely,” which earned them a Grammy Awards nomination for the year 1983.

At the height of their success, Denise Clark opted to leave “The Clark Sisters” for good. She also left her family to move to the West Coast. Although neither party publicly announced the reason behind Denise Clark’s departure, several rumors started going around about it. Rumor mill suggested that the other sisters had jointly decided to oust Denise Clark from the group. It was also suggested that none of them was on talking terms. After leaving the group, she pursued a solo musical career.

Denise Clark came forward with the reason behind her departure years later. In a scandalous interview in 2019, she revealed that she had an affair with a bishop before her departure from the group. The affair resulted in her pregnancy. She is a member of a devout Christian family. So, she was being pressurized into getting an abortion by her family members. It is because a child out of wedlock was frowned upon by the community back then.

She became frustrated with the constant bickering about her pregnancy. As a result, she chose to move away. She was not kicked out. However, the conversations regarding her situation worsened her relationship with her sisters. The sisters partially reconciled after they met at their mother’s funeral following years of no contact. Sadly, the sisters still have a strained relationship even today.

Hallmark released a biographical movie “The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel” based on the sisters’ life in 2020. Upon its premiere, the film became the most-watched movie in four years on Lifetime.
