How Did Da Brat Become Rich?

Shawntae Harris was born on April 14, 1974 in Chicago, Illinois to David Ray McCoy, a businessman and Beverly Calloway, a bus driver. Her parents never married and the future rapper star was growing up in a two neighborhoods simultaneously: at a time she lived with her mother and grandmother and attended an Apostolic church four times per week on average.

Later, Da Brat played basketball and run track in Kenwood Academy and finished Academy of Scholastic Achievement in 1992.

With his help Da Brat released the first album called Funkdafied in 1994. The album peaked #2 in R&B chart and went platinum, selling over 1 million copies. It is no surprise, that after such stunning success Da Brat wanted to continue her rap career, increase her status as a rap star and make good money. In 1996 she tried to repeat her first success with a release of the second album Anuthatantrum. It peaked at #26 spot in the Billboard Hot 100 and songs Sittin’ on Top of the World and Ghetto Love reached Top Five in R&B. That same year the rapper debuted in a movie called Kazaam co-starring with Shaquille O’Neal.

In late 90s Da Brat continued to produce music and starring in various TV-shows, like The Parent ‘Hood, It’s Showtime at the Apollo, Soul Train.

In 2000 Da Brat released her third album called Unrestricted. The album wasn’t as successful as her previous works, but still managed to get over 1 million copies in sales. The fourth and the last studio album she released in 2003. It is called Limelite, Luv & Niteclubz which peaked at 6 spot in the R&B chart and #17 in the Billboard Hot 200.

Her next years were doomed by criminal and drugs. As early as 2001 Da Brat already get herself into a legal trouble after she had battered a woman with a gun. The rapper later pleaded guilty, was fined $1000, 80 hours of community service and 1 year probation.

In October 2007 Da Brat got into s serious trouble. Whilst visiting the Studio 72 nightclub in Atlanta, she got into a heated argument with a hostess. When the latter turned around to ask her manager, Da Brat struck her face with a rum bottle from behind.

In a courtroom the rapper pleaded guilty to assault charges and was sentenced to 3 year imprisonment as well as 200 hours of community work and put on a 7 years probation.

She was released on May 7, 2010, after spending 21 months in prison. Her official imprisonment ended on February 28, 2011. Three years later her victim was awarded with $6.4 million.

But that’s not all problems that Da Brat had in 2010s. In August 2018, she filed for a bankruptcy. She listed $108,700 in assets and $7.8 million in liabilities whilst her income was only $92,000 and it went down to $75,000 in 2018.
